Swimmer Returns with Dreamy New Single “Waterbodies”

Following a breakout year on the South African live circuit, alternative rock artist Swimmer has released his captivating new single, “Waterbodies.” The track is a dreamy acoustic pop piece that explores the beauty of human connection through vivid storytelling and heartfelt melodies.

“Inspired by the story of two people coming from opposite worlds, and somehow meeting in the middle. Like all water leading to the ocean, their destiny to be together was always inevitable,” says Marcel, Swimmer’s lead singer and songwriter.

With warm acoustic textures and lyrical depth, “Waterbodies” evokes the emotional honesty of artists such as Crowded House and Counting Crows while maintaining Swimmer’s distinctive South African sound. The song balances introspective lyricism with lush instrumentation, creating a reflective and cinematic listening experience.

Since releasing his debut album Sirens and Cathedrals in September 2023, Swimmer has steadily built a reputation as one of Johannesburg’s most exciting live performers. Singles such as “Baggage,” which spent 13 weeks on the Mix FM Top 40 peaking at #13, and “Feeding Time” featuring actor and musician Frank Opperman, which reached #37, marked his first significant radio breakthroughs. His music moves fluidly between hard and alternative rock, acoustic rock, and indie folk, blending atmospheric arrangements with emotionally resonant lyrics that showcase his range.

Over the past year, Swimmer has made a strong impact on Gauteng’s live music scene, performing at venues including Bailey’s, Sognage, The Radium Beerhall, Rumours, Studio 69, Jozi Showbar, and The Irish Club Linden. He has shared stages with notable South African acts, opening for Broke ‘n Free, Black Cat Bones, and Laudo Liebenberg, and co-headlining shows alongside After Wonderland and Man as Machine. His live performances have highlighted his ability to deliver both intimate acoustic moments and powerful electric sets.

Recorded in Johannesburg, “Waterbodies” embraces a stripped-down, emotionally charged sound. The song reflects on the natural flow of human connection, illustrating how two lives from different worlds can converge and move together through unseen currents. Swimmer’s vocals carry warmth and sincerity, supported by acoustic instrumentation that emphasizes the song’s contemplative tone.

With its evocative storytelling, cinematic warmth, and emotional honesty, “Waterbodies” marks a new chapter for Swimmer. The single reinforces his artistic growth while remaining true to the heartfelt sound that has earned him a devoted following across South Africa.
