Goldmax and DJ Tira Bring Durban Gqom to a New Level

Voices Of Gqom, the long-awaited collaboration between Goldmax and DJ Tira, marks a defining moment in South African music. The album draws from Durban’s streets, nightlife and local culture, blending raw Gqom energy with contemporary vocal elements inspired by the golden era of Durban Kwaito. It balances nostalgia with innovation, delivering a sound that is both familiar and forward-thinking.

The partnership between Goldmax and DJ Tira has been years in the making. Their creative synergy first emerged with the 2018 hit Pakisha, and Voices Of Gqom expands that chemistry into a full album. The duo honours Gqom’s foundations while pushing its boundaries, creating a project that is precise, fearless and intentional.

Much of the songwriting comes from Goldmax, who channels Durban life into every track. The album captures everyday characters, neighbourhood stories, and street perspectives. Tracks like “Isgenge Sengane” and “Umxhosa” reflect the city’s energy and diversity, blending humour, social commentary and real-life experiences from KwaMashu, Elangeni, and downtown Durban. Each song acts as a musical diary of township life, giving listeners an authentic taste of Durban culture.

Recorded at Afrotainment Studios, the album is a collaborative effort featuring established hitmakers and emerging producers. This combination ensures a fresh, dynamic sound while maintaining the integrity of Gqom. The album includes explosive dancefloor tracks and catchy vocal-driven grooves designed to energise audiences.
