Matt Shaw Steps Into Brighter Territory With “Sunny Days”

Singer-songwriter Matt Shaw has released his latest single, “Sunny Days,” a track that perfectly captures the rhythm, warmth and laid-back spirit of a South African summer. The song delivers sun-soaked melodies and feel-good energy, creating an instant soundtrack for long golden days and relaxed coastal living.
“Sunny Days” started as a spontaneous idea in a friends’ WhatsApp group. Shaw set out to write it quickly, focusing on simplicity rather than deep symbolism. His goal was to capture the classic holiday feeling: the sun shining, the beach calling, and the carefree joy of an ice-cold drink before noon.
The final track is a joyful anthem built on an irresistible groove, highlighted by a fiery saxophone solo that enhances its festive energy. The single marks a shift from Shaw’s earlier introspective work that explored love and anxiety. He explains that music does not always need to solve problems; sometimes it just needs to make you feel good.
Produced in partnership with Christopher Paterson and Steven Watters at Crescent Recording in Gqeberha, “Sunny Days” features a talented lineup of local musicians. Saxophonist Joash, producer Sloani, and backing vocalists Monique van Der Ham and Russell Sneyd contribute to the track’s lively, celebratory sound.
Shaw reflects on the collaborative process, saying, “It was amazing to have so many people I love be part of such a fun project.” He hopes the song captures the familiar South African holiday arc that begins on the beach and ends around a braai, offering a soundtrack for memorable summer moments.
With “Sunny Days,” Matt Shaw invites listeners to pause, embrace small moments of joy, and soak in the warmth of summer. The single highlights the carefree energy of South African coastal life, making it a perfect addition to any summer playlist.
