DJ Ganyani Reflects on Career, Competition and New Music Ahead of Birthday Celebration

Legendary House music producer DJ Ganyani, known for his 2013 hit Xigubu, has seen the South African music scene evolve dramatically over the years. From the era of Blackberry phones and iconic grooves to today’s vibrant landscape of Amapiano, Qqom, and Afro House, Ganyani says the variety of genres presents healthy competition for him as an artist.
The award-winning DJ, whose career spans over three decades, is preparing for his 56th birthday celebration later this month. He shared his plans for the year, career highlights, challenges, and upcoming music. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with prominent artists including Big Nuz and Nomcebo Zikode, producing tracks that have defined the House music scene in Mzansi.
“My birthday is on January 19, but I’ve decided to celebrate it on January 25, so that more of my fans who are working can be a part of it. It’s an annual event that I do in Meadowlands, Soweto, where I was born,” Ganyani said. The event is themed to reflect his roots and has become a staple gathering for his supporters.
Known for hits such as Xigubu, Emezulwini, and Be There, Ganyani says he has new music lined up for 2026. “I always have new music that I play at my party just to test the market and see how it’ll be received. I have a couple of songs that I will debut at my party, and I have an array of DJs that I have booked for that day,” he explained, highlighting the energy and excitement fans can expect.
Although competition in the music industry has increased with the rise of new genres, Ganyani remains unshaken. “I am a huge Amapiano fan, and all the genres that have popped up over the last couple of years have pushed me to do my best as a house DJ. It’s not bad to have competition; I see it as something good. It pushes me to do my best,” he said.
Ganyani also reflected on his collaborative approach, which has been a cornerstone of his career. “So, when I hear someone’s voice, I create a beat that suits their voice and is compatible with their voice, like for example Nomcebo, I did the same. Also, my music is based on my lived experiences,” he concluded, showing his commitment to authentic and resonant music.
As Ganyani celebrates another year and prepares to share new tracks with his fans, it is clear that his influence in House music remains strong, and his creative journey continues to inspire both new and established artists in South Africa.
