DJ Maphorisa Announces Return to Afro House

South African producer DJ Maphorisa has confirmed that he is shifting his focus back to afro house. The announcement followed the release of an unreleased afro house track on his social media, accompanied by a message to fans: “Amapiano is in good hands, I am going back to my roots where it all started; AFRO!”
The post received widespread support from both fellow artists and fans. Asvante Music commented, “I feel you on this,” while DJ Zinhle wrote, “Let’s go.” Music collective We Are Mayonie added, “Best decision that you have ever made in a long time.” Fans echoed the sentiment, welcoming his return to the sound that defined his early career.
Before rising to prominence in amapiano, DJ Maphorisa built his name in afro house and deep house. His earlier productions emphasized rhythm, percussion, and groove. Tracks like “Bazoyenza” with Busiswa showcased his versatility and helped establish him as a leading producer prior to the mainstream dominance of amapiano.
He was also a key member of the South African music group Uhuru, a kwaito and house quartet known for hits in the early 2010s. Uhuru produced popular tracks such as “Y-tjukutja” and Mafikizolo’s “Khona,” solidifying Maphorisa’s early influence in the house music scene.
DJ Maphorisa later became a defining figure in amapiano alongside Kabza De Small under the Scorpion Kings banner. Together, they released chart-topping hits including “Banyana,” “Izolo,” “Emcimbini,” “Vula Vala,” “Sponono,” and “Abalele.” These tracks dominated radio, streaming platforms, and dance floors, earning awards and helping introduce amapiano to international audiences.
The producer’s move back to afro house marks a return to the genre that shaped his foundation, promising new rhythms and productions rooted in the sound that first established his career.
