Salif Keita to Headline Montreux Jazz Festival’s Historic African Debut

When Salif Keita steps onto the Montreux Jazz Festival stage in Franschhoek this March, it won’t just be another headline set — it will mark a full-circle moment for African music history.

The legendary Malian singer, widely revered as The Golden Voice of Africa, has been announced as the lead artist in the first phase of the Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek (MJFSA), presented by Nedbank. The festival, taking place from 27–29 March 2026, represents Montreux’s first-ever edition on African soil.

Keita’s inclusion is both symbolic and intentional. With a career spanning more than five decades, he stands as one of the most influential artists Africa has ever produced — a musician whose voice has carried themes of identity, exile, dignity and resilience across generations and continents.

From his early work with Les Ambassadeurs and the Rail Band, to his groundbreaking solo career that fused Mandé traditions with jazz, funk and global pop, Salif Keita has consistently challenged musical and social boundaries. As an albino artist who defied entrenched cultural stigma to become a global icon, his story is inseparable from his sound — courageous, uncompromising and deeply human.

His performance at Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek is a rare African appearance and a powerful statement: that the continent is not merely hosting the festival, but standing at its centre.

“Salif Keita embodies everything Montreux stands for — artistic integrity, legacy and truth,” said festival founder Mark Goedvolk. “His presence anchors this edition in African excellence and global relevance.”

Setting the Tone for Montreux in Africa

Keita will headline The Arches, the festival’s main outdoor stage, setting the artistic tone for an edition defined by depth rather than scale. His performance establishes a lineage-first approach — positioning African masters alongside contemporary innovators, and framing the festival as a space for musical dialogue rather than spectacle.

The broader first-wave line-up includes Mandisi DyantyisBilly Monama’s Guitar Convergence (featuring Moss Mogale and Vusi Mahlasela), and The Kesivan amaBig Band Experience, but it is Keita’s presence that signals Montreux’s intent to honour Africa’s musical architects.

A Homecoming of Sorts

Though Montreux Jazz Festival has long celebrated African music in Switzerland, bringing Salif Keita to headline its African debut feels like a homecoming — not just geographically, but culturally. It is a reminder that African music has always been global, and that its elders remain vital to its future.

As Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek prepares to roll out further artist announcements in the coming weeks, Keita’s confirmation stands as a defining moment: a master artist opening the door for a new chapter of global exchange, written from the continent outward.

🎟 Tickets for The Arches stage, featuring Salif Keita, are now on sale via Ticketmaster from 09:00 on 28 January 2026.

Montreux has arrived in Africa — led by a voice that helped shape its sound.
