Southern Wild Return with New Single “Bad Vibration King” After Five-Year Hiatus

Cape Town rock outfit Southern Wild have officially returned with their new single, “Bad Vibration King,” marking their first release in five years. The track gives fans an early glimpse of an upcoming album currently in development and introduces a fresh creative chapter for the band.
Formed in 2015, Southern Wild quickly earned a reputation for a genre-blurring sound that fuses alternative rock, post-rock, neo-soul, and folk. Emerging from Cape Town’s vibrant music scene, the band has performed on main stages at major South African festivals including Up The Creek, Rocking the Daisies, Smoking Dragon, and Oppikoppi. They have also shared stages with international acts such as Incubus and The Cure during their South African tours.
Work on the band’s second album stalled when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the music industry to a standstill. Frontman Dave spent four years in Zambia, stepping back from the band due to personal and financial pressures. While the hiatus was challenging, it allowed space for reflection and creative reset, setting the stage for their return.
Southern Wild now return as a four-piece, with Conrad Birch joining on lead guitar. His addition has reshaped the band’s sound and energy, revitalising both their writing and recording processes. This renewed lineup has been central to completing “Bad Vibration King,” a song the band had been developing for several years.
The single explores the tension between emotional responsibility and the weight of reality. According to the band, it reflects the struggle of facing life’s challenges while remaining present for someone you care deeply about. The track also marks the first lyrical collaboration between Dave and Conrad, which helped bring the song to its final form.
Asked to summarise “Bad Vibration King” in five words, the band chose: “Where love exists, hope persists.” The song is now available to stream and download online. The release signals the start of a new era for Southern Wild, shaped by time apart, distance, and renewed creative connection. Fans can expect more music from their forthcoming album later this year as the band builds on this long-awaited comeback.
