Prince Kaybee is a platinum-selling producer, DJ and television personality with multiple South African Music Awards, including Male Artist of the Year, Best Dance Album and Album of the Year, alongside a Metro FM Music Award for Best Dance Album. He has collaborated with Shimza, Black Motion, Busiswa, Lady Zama and Ami Faku, and his track ‘Uwrongo’ was featured in TIME Magazine’s 10 Best Songs of 2020. Black Motion, formed in 2010 by Thabo Mabogwane and Kabelo “Problem Child Ten83” Koma, are renowned for their immersive percussion-driven soundscapes. They have multiple South African Music Awards, Gold- and Platinum-certified releases, and performances on platforms such as NPR Tiny Desk. Their Afro House approach combines rhythmic depth with melodic intricacy, evident in their remix of ‘Time’. Karmacoda, the original creators of the track, are a San Francisco-based duo whose career spans electronica, trip-hop, R&B, ballads and dream pop, known for blending soulful vocals with jazz lounge influences.
The original ‘Time’ comes from Karmacoda’s 2022 LP Lessons In Time, featuring Jessica Ford on vocals, Brett Crockett on vocals and production, and Eric Matsuno on bass and multi-instrumentation. The track explores themes of regret and introspection with subtle autotuned vocals layered over piano chords, steady percussion and hypnotic melodies. Prince Kaybee’s remix adds a dynamic Afro House bassline with piano arpeggios that evoke a spectrum of emotions from reflection to subtle melancholy. Black Motion’s remix delivers a kinetic, percussion-driven rhythm layered with hypnotic arpeggios and atmospheric textures, preserving the song’s emotional depth while creating a dancefloor-ready anthem.
Both remixes demonstrate the creative power of Afro House and the skill of South African producers. Black Motion describes their remix as a ritual where rhythm becomes memory and melody becomes prayer, connecting the track to a spiritual pulse beyond conventional time. Prince Kaybee explains that his creative process involves translating vocals into color and emotion, resulting in a remix that evokes cool, fresh energy. These versions extend Karmacoda’s music into global dance spheres while honoring the original’s emotional core. ‘Time’ in its remixed forms offers an immersive listening experience that unites soulful songwriting with the hypnotic energy of Afro House.
