Azania Jazz Co. Announces Ambitious Concept Album Between Africa’s Rivers

South African jazz collective Azania Jazz Co. releases new jazz album, Between Africa’s Rivers, an ambitious project that celebrates Africa’s indigenous musical instruments through contemporary jazz.

Unlike conventional Afro-jazz albums, Between Africa’s Rivers places one traditional African instrument at the centre of each composition. Rather than serving as background percussion, every featured instrument becomes the lead voice, guiding the arrangement and shaping the emotional character of the music.

The 14-track album includes compositions titled simply after the instruments themselves, including Djembe, Talking Drum, Dunun, Bougarabou, Ngoma, Ashiko, Udu, Shekere, Agogo, Balafon, Marimba, Krin, Axatse and Hosho.

According to the group, the minimalist approach is intentional.

“The album isn’t about us,” the collective explains. “It’s about allowing each instrument to speak in its own language while jazz becomes the conversation connecting them.”

The project draws inspiration from rivers across the African continent, using flowing melodies, warm brass arrangements, Rhodes piano, upright bass and improvisation to create what the group describes as an “Afro Jazz Nights” listening experience.

Visually, the album continues this storytelling through artwork depicting a child sitting quietly beside an African river at sunset, symbolising the passing of musical traditions between generations.

Rather than portraying a performer, the artwork invites listeners to become observers, reflecting the album’s deeper message that African music is something to be experienced, remembered and shared.

With jazz enjoying renewed global attention, Between Africa’s Rivers offers a fresh perspective by highlighting instruments that have shaped African music for centuries.
