The Covid-19 pandemic has ruined a lot of people’s livelihood due to the lockdown. Some sectors were opened up again as the levels have been eased. However, the music industry has not been in a good position because they still cannot get gigs.
Some artists have stated that they haven’t received any remuneration for about 6 months. This has prompted the artists from KwaZulu-Natal to close down the N3 highway in demonstration. The musician were demonstrating to ask the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, to open up the country because they at risk of losing the things that they own. Gqom musician, Dladla Mshunqisi has spoken about his worry on how the government reacts to their pleas to Isolezwe. He states that artists are disappointed as to how the officials treated them when they were demonstrating on the highway.
“This is really painful. We have been working and saving money for rainy days, but this has gone on for far too long. We never expected that we would not work for such a long time. As it is the 3 months I was given by the bank to pay up have passed. The police treated us like criminals and that hurts,” says Dladla Mshunqisi. The musician states that he still can’t breathe properly because of the teargas at the protest. The artist made rounds on the internet due to a video him running away from the police.
