Liquideep Make Powerful Comeback Without Chasing Music Trends

Mzansi’s iconic soul and house duo Liquideep have reunited, marking their return to the South African music scene after years apart. Jonathan “Ziyon” Hamilton and Thabo “Ryzor” Shokgolo, who split in 2014 to pursue solo projects, are back with the same message they carried when they first emerged: authenticity over trends.

At a time when amapiano and 3-Step dominate the airwaves, Liquideep are proving there is still space for soulful house and timeless songwriting. For them, music is not about competing with what’s popular but about creating art that resonates with listeners.

“We’re not here to follow trends. Even when we first came into the game, we didn’t come into it because we were following anybody. We were ourselves. We feel like everything has its place. Everything has a space. We don’t have to compete among each other – it’s all beautiful. It uplifts the country, gives people jobs, it gives people representation,” Ziyon told Daily Sun.

Ryzor echoed the sentiment, stressing that music should never be limited to categories. “If you check someone else’s playlist, it’s rare they listen to one type of music. Sometimes you feel like one thing, other times it depends on your mood. Music just adds to the background of life and makes it beautiful. We don’t have to pigeonhole it.”

For Liquideep, the broader view is that South African music across genres is already a global force. “Everything has its place. Instead of pitting people against each other, we should celebrate the fact that music in this country, no matter the genre, is created with excellence and that’s been proven time and time again,” Ziyon said.

Liquideep’s comeback reaffirms their legacy as one of South Africa’s most influential soul and house duos. They are not trying to outshine amapiano or 3-Step but to remind fans that authentic, heartfelt music will always have a place. Their return marks an important moment for South African music, showing that while genres shift, legends never fade.
