SosoBoy Fosho: From Mdantsane to Global Screens Using Music to Inspire and Give Back

For SosoBoy Fosho, music is more than fame or bright lights. It is a calling to inspire, uplift, and open doors for others. At 34, Sonwabile Madonela, known professionally as SosoBoy, has transformed his talent into a force for social impact. Hailing from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape, he has used his music to tell stories that resonate far beyond the studio.

Fresh from launching his PE project, featuring the standout track Mine, SosoBoy reached a milestone few achieve. SONY selected his music for multiple international film soundtracks. His songs appear in films such as We Got Mourners, Sour Grapes, Lullaby, and Mirror, marking a major step for an artist who remains deeply connected to his roots.

Notable tracks like Pink Roses, Forever Mine, and Ndiphumelele have connected with audiences both locally and internationally. “When I found out SONY wanted to use my music in movies, it felt surreal,” he recalls. “It was something I used to fantasise about back in Mdantsane. Not many people from my kasi get these kinds of opportunities, so to see it happen was overwhelming, but I was ready for it.”

SosoBoy aims to bridge worlds through his music. “I hope when people hear my songs in those films, they feel that Africa has relevant, universal stories,” he said. “My music shares my perspective on issues around us, and being featured internationally proves our voices matter globally.”

His creative process draws from universal emotions such as love, frustration, accomplishment, and heartbreak. He focuses on connection across cultures. “Music isn’t only about what you say. It’s about how you say it,” he said. “If you carry the emotion and the essence of the song through your voice, people will feel it, no matter where they are.”

Despite his international reach, SosoBoy stays grounded in his community. Partnering with Masivuke Community Development in Duncan Village, he donated soccer kits to Masivuke FC, a youth club that teaches structure, discipline, and hope. The club also addresses substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, and raises awareness around Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

“I come from Mdantsane, and know how tough it is to survive there,” he said. “That alone pushed me to give back. I may not have much, but I know what it’s like to have nothing, so I share what I have with my people.”

He also supported his old schools by donating uniforms and stationery to one pupil from each institution, encouraging young learners to view education as a steppingstone to success. In Joburg, his generosity was evident at the 3rd Annual Aerobics Marathon at Dipuwe Primary School on 6 September 2025, where he provided toiletries including deodorants, sanitary pads, soap, toothbrushes, and bath cloths, helping children maintain dignity and confidence.

SosoBoy’s live performance at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on 13 September 2025 drew large crowds, celebrating his PE project and tracks like Mine and Forever Mine, solidifying his growing influence.

Offstage, he enjoys cooking with his team. “I enjoy cooking,” he said. “This is one of the things that keeps me grounded.”

With his heart in the community, his music reaching global audiences, and his purpose clear, SosoBoy Fosho demonstrates that true greatness is measured not only by success, but by the light you bring to others.
