Bhekizizwe Sizwe Mdluli Brings Afro-Soul Music to the Streets of Vosloorus

Vosloorus-born Afro-soul artist Bhekizizwe Sizwe Mdluli is taking his music directly to the people, transforming the streets into vibrant stages that foster connection, creativity, and celebration.

His latest album, Thungisani, draws inspiration from a phrase traditionally used at weddings and key community gatherings. The album celebrates humanity, blending cultural pride with urban sounds. Personal and heartfelt, it tells Sizwe’s life story and includes a special feature from his seven-year-old daughter, Ayaan Mdluli, on the track Kulotshiwe.

“This album is very close to my heart. It’s about coming together, dancing together, and sharing moments of connection through music. I want people to feel the rhythm, share their joy, and become part of something bigger. It’s not just about listening to a song. It’s about experiencing music with your body, soul, and spirit. It encourages self-reflection and builds confidence,” Sizwe said.

To bring Thungisani to life, Sizwe launched a six-week street music series in the Vosloorus business district, Ekurhuleni. The pop-up events take place every Sunday from 2pm to 6pm, featuring live performances that engage the local community and uplift the area. The next event is scheduled for 23 November at Nguza Street, near Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital.

“The area is busy and full of life, so many people get to experience what we’re doing. The events aim to bring live music to the kasi, support local businesses, nurture creativity, and encourage entrepreneurship. We also bring storytelling and culture to the space through music. The response has been incredible, and the events are already making a real impact,” Sizwe explained.

Now in its third week, the series has drawn growing attention from tourism officials, local business owners, and community members. Sizwe plans to feature different kasi artists in future sessions to create entertainment-filled, relaxing Sundays that celebrate local talent.

“There’s so much talent in and around Ekurhuleni that deserves to be nurtured,” he added. Through this initiative, Sizwe hopes to revitalise the live music scene in Vosloorus, support small businesses, and inspire community pride.

“With support from Ugqozi Entertainment and the local community, we aim to grow this project, bring people together, and show how music can transform spaces, strengthen businesses, and change lives,” Sizwe concluded.

The Thungisani street music series demonstrates how live music can connect communities, uplift local economies, and preserve cultural expression. It sets a model for artists seeking to make an impact beyond traditional stages.
