Istimela Samawele Step Boldly into 2026 with New Single “Cognac”

Rising Maskandi duo Istimela Samawele, twin brothers Bhekizizwe Thandokuhle Phakathi and Bhekozayo Thandoluhle Phakathi, have entered 2026 with a striking new single titled “Cognac.” The track features Maskandi heavyweight uGatsheni and Afropop favourites Q Twins, blending tradition, modern flair, and honest storytelling to expand the duo’s growing signature sound.

Now signed to the TalEmpire roster, Istimela Samawele are shaping a fresh, youthful wave within contemporary Maskandi. Their music fuses authentic Maskandi instrumentation with Afropop polish, creating a sound that is both energetic and culturally grounded.

“Cognac” tells a story many South Africans know well: a man spends his earnings on partying and alcohol, neglecting long-term responsibilities such as cattle ownership, lobola, home-building, and securing a family legacy. The duo approaches the topic with sharp wit and candid commentary, entertaining listeners while highlighting social truths about financial habits and lifestyle choices.

The track opens with the vivid line: “Yaphela imali yam, bizani uBar Man, aletha iCognac, a-adde iTonic, ngiqede iBonus,” meaning “My money is gone. Call the barman to bring cognac and tonic – let me finish my bonus.” The lyric captures the fleeting nature of year-end bonuses and the tension between short-term indulgence and long-term stability.

Bhekizizwe explained the inspiration behind the track: “We wanted to tell a story that feels real – something you hear in the village, in the taxi, even at work. ‘Cognac’ is entertaining, but it’s also a reminder about where our money goes.” His twin, Bhekozayo, added: “Our music has always been about truth. If people can dance, laugh and still reflect on their lives after listening, then we’ve done our job.”

“Cognac” is available now on all major streaming platforms, offering fans a vibrant mix of traditional Maskandi sounds and contemporary Afropop energy that entertains while prompting reflection.
