Ndlozi Releases “Usizi,” a Seven-Track Album Celebrating Amagwijo and South African Heritage

Ndlozi, known politically as Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and formerly the spokesperson for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has released his new album “Usizi,” a seven-track project running 23 minutes that draws its core influence from amagwijo. As an artist, he goes simply by his surname and now hosts #POWERTalk on POWER98.7.
Announcing the album on social media, Ndlozi shared his excitement to release the project, stating he wanted to “keep the bonfire burning.” His passion for singing has been longstanding, and “Usizi” marks his decision to place that love for music at the centre of a formal release.
The album carries the spirit of collective struggle, with recurring themes of pain, reflection, and the ongoing search for national healing. Each track is short, rhythmic, and built on repetition, reflecting the call and response structure central to amagwijo traditions.
Some tracks incorporate elements beyond amagwijo, including traditional gospel, choral music, isicathamiya, and light pop touches in the backing vocals. This fusion creates a sound that is both easy to follow and deeply rooted in familiar South African musical forms, offering listeners a blend of cultural heritage and modern accessibility.
Ndlozi has previously spoken on his radio show about the importance of amagwijo as a form of collective expression, resilience, and cultural recovery. “Usizi” translates that ethos into music, presenting a project that honours tradition while engaging contemporary audiences.
With this album, Ndlozi establishes himself not only as a political voice and media host but also as an artist committed to celebrating South African culture and the power of shared musical expression.
