Freshlyground Returns with Jabula, a New Voice and Sparks Debate in Mzansi

South African band Freshlyground is back after seven years with their new release, Jabula, introducing 20-year-old Mbali Makhoba as the lead vocalist. The announcement has stirred conversation across the country, with fans and fellow artists weighing in on the bold lineup change.

Singer Simphiwe Dana voiced her skepticism on X, highlighting the risks of replacing original members in legendary bands. She stated, “This new project without Zolani won’t work. As well as The Soil without Buhle. Stupid not to know what your band’s power is… It’s not gonna work without my sisters.” Her comments quickly drew attention, with some agreeing that founding members define a band, while others urged support for new talent.

Mbali Makhoba officially joined Freshlyground in 2025, after performing with them since 2023. She debuted live at Kirstenbosch Gardens in January and has since toured across South Africa. Band members praised her talent and energy. Simon Attwell said, “When Mbali walked into the room, we could feel it was the start of something special.” Julio Sigauque added, “She’s got her own vibe, her own flavour, she’s a big talent and an incredible singer.”

Bassist Josh Hawks noted that working with Mbali reminded them of the depth of South African musical talent. Drummer Peter Cohen described the recording process for Jabula as “electric,” while Mbali reflected that joining the band felt natural. “It didn’t feel like I had to fill someone else’s shoes. Everything just flowed. It felt like I’d known them for years,” she said.

Produced by Grammy-winning producer JB Arthur, Jabula officially marks Freshlyground’s return to the music scene. The band expressed respect for former lead singer Zolani Mahola, who continues her solo career focused on heritage, storytelling, and nature.

Freshlyground’s comeback combines a new voice with their signature sound, offering fans both continuity and a fresh chapter in the band’s storied history.
