Stiaan Reynierse Marks a Year of Sobriety with New Afrikaans Single “Sewe”

Following the international recognition of his English single “Fight Fire with a Flame,” musician Stiaan Reynierse returns with a powerful Afrikaans release. The new single, “Sewe,” celebrates a full year of sobriety while offering hope to those battling addiction.
“Sewe” combines raw Afrikaans rock with honest, cutting lyrics. Unlike typical Friday releases, the song was deliberately released midweek, on the anniversary of the day Reynierse broke free from his personal struggles twelve months ago. The timing underscores the song’s personal and symbolic significance.
Although Reynierse writes internationally under his birth name Christian John, he chose to release “Sewe” as Stiaan Reynierse. The name reflects a personal history tied to themes of slavery and liberation, directly connecting to the song’s message.
The title “Sewe” carries dual symbolism. It references the biblical image of “seven others” occupying an empty house or spirit, and it represents seven as the perfect number. The contrast forms the song’s core: both a warning and an invitation to freedom. Simple yet striking metaphors give the message an emotional weight that resonates deeply.
Reynierse describes “Sewe” as a personal victory cry. After years of self-destruction, the song represents liberation and gratitude. It declares war on the lies that held him captive while celebrating the freedom that follows recovery.
Afrikaans rock is a demanding genre, and Reynierse uses it to deliver a positive message without diluting its raw edge. The song exposes the darkness of addiction while highlighting the hope of recovery. He collaborated once again with writer Francis Grobler and producer Pierre Rossouw, also known as Pierre Papsak, to craft a track that is both honest and fearless.
“Sewe” unfolds like a story of a former slave moving toward victory. It portrays the struggle and triumph of breaking free, symbolizing the resilience required to overcome addiction.
Born in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, Christian John Reynierse demonstrated musical talent early as part of the Mpumalanga Prestige choir and orchestra. He debuted with his first album, Sonde, in 2016, gaining national recognition. His performance of “Voshaarnooi” in the film Ballade vir ’n Enkeling and a Pearl Jam tribute show in 2018 further boosted his profile.
After several successful singles, Reynierse released the album Anderkant die Reën in 2024. His English single “Fight Fire with a Flame” brought international acclaim under the name Christian John. “Sewe” follows as an Afrikaans rock release under Stiaan Reynierse, marking a year of sobriety and a powerful personal and artistic milestone.
