The Fismits Return With Bold New Single and Video ‘Independence’

South African indie-alternative rock project The Fismits have returned with a powerful new single and music video titled Independence, marking the next chapter in the rollout of their upcoming EP Falling Joy. Released today, the track serves as the second offering from the highly anticipated project, which is scheduled for release on 26 June. Following the emotional tone established by the first single Scars, “Independence” pushes the project into more adventurous sonic territory. The song embraces electronic textures, looping rhythms and a strong new-wave pulse that immediately sets it apart from earlier material connected to the band’s catalogue. It presents a sound that feels expansive, layered and deeply intentional while still maintaining the emotional honesty that has become central to The Fismits’ identity.

The story behind “Independence” stretches back several decades, giving the release a deeper creative significance. The song was originally written during the early 1990s and remained part of the extensive The Mind Theatre archive for many years. Rather than fading into obscurity, the track continued to evolve creatively over time, refusing to settle into a final version. Decades later, musician and producer Mark Biagio revisited the material and transformed it completely, pushing it far beyond its original British indie-rock influences. The result is a reimagined version that blends alternative rock with synth-driven atmospheres, tonal contrasts and an unmistakable sense of artistic freedom that now defines the song’s modern identity.

Recorded during sessions held throughout 2024 and 2025 at Dirty Badger Music, “Independence” reflects a deliberate creative shift in both sound and production style. Biagio handled the production, mixing and mastering duties himself, giving the project a cohesive and personal creative direction. Instead of treating the song as a nostalgic recreation of older material, he approached it through experimentation and instinct, allowing the music to evolve naturally. This process introduced a looseness and unpredictability to the arrangement, giving the song space to move fluidly between moments of restraint and release. That balance between structure and freedom gives “Independence” a confident energy that feels both modern and emotionally grounded.

The release also continues the wider narrative being explored throughout the “Falling Joy” EP. The project revisits mid-1990s material originally connected to songwriter Bruce Barrett, but reinterprets it through the perspective of time, experience and creative growth. While “Scars” introduced listeners to the emotional core of the project, “Independence” expands its sonic reach by adding movement, colour and a stronger experimental edge. This evolution highlights the willingness of The Fismits to challenge their own sound rather than remain confined to familiar territory. The upcoming third single When, alongside the tracks Falling Joy and Too Small A Word, will complete the EP when it arrives on 26 June, bringing the project toward a reflective yet resolved conclusion.

Since forming in 2016, The Fismits have steadily built a body of work that reflects artistic independence and emotional depth. Their catalogue includes the EP Anywhere released in 2017, the album Before the Hindsight from 2020 and the 2024 single Halen. What initially started as a three-piece band has gradually evolved into a singular creative outlet led by Biagio, allowing for greater creative control and experimentation. This transformation has given the project a distinct identity rooted in craftsmanship, honesty and sonic exploration. Over the years, The Fismits have developed a sound that comfortably bridges alternative rock traditions with more atmospheric and electronic influences.

With “Independence,” The Fismits demonstrate how older creative ideas can be reshaped into something fresh, relevant and forward-looking without losing their emotional core. The single captures a project that feels fully comfortable embracing experimentation while remaining connected to its roots. Its layered production, evolving structure and confident atmosphere reflect a band unafraid to revisit the past while continuing to move creatively forward. As anticipation builds toward the release of “Falling Joy” later this month, “Independence” stands as one of the clearest examples yet of the artistic direction The Fismits are now pursuing. The track not only expands the sonic identity of the project but also reinforces its commitment to growth, reinvention and meaningful songwriting.
