Legendary South African Music Producer Richie S Dies at 71

Richard Siluma, popularly known as Richie S, passed away at Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday, 25 August. He was 71 years old.
Richie S made a name for himself in 1985 with the mbaqanga hit, African Dance. His work as a producer shaped South African music, collaborating with legendary artists including the late Lucky Dube, Stimela, and Izingane Zoma.
According to his son Ntokozo, Richie S suffered a stroke two weeks ago. “What shocked us is that he was not ill or complained about any illness. But two weeks ago, he went to Samro offices to check his royalties, and we were told that he unexpectedly collapsed and was rushed to the hospital,” Ntokozo told Daily Sun.
Doctors informed the family that high blood pressure caused the severe stroke. Ntokozo said, “We are fortunate he didn’t pass away instantly. By God’s grace we were able to be with him for almost two weeks. We are still shocked and heartbroken because he was not ill for a long time. He was not that old person who normally suffers from high blood pressure.”
The family will announce memorial and funeral service details in the coming days. Richie S leaves behind a legacy in South African music, remembered for both his hit songs and his work as a producer for some of the country’s most celebrated musicians.
