Music Connects Generations: Marah Louw and Sipho Mabuse Revive Historic Concert in Soweto

Music has always held the power to unite people, regardless of age, creed, or ethnicity. In 1985, ‘Concert in the Park’ at Ellis Park Stadium became a landmark event, drawing crowds eager to experience performances by icons like Marah Louw, Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, and PJ Powers. Forty years on, Marah and Sipho are bringing that spirit back through the Unity Concert, a modern reinterpretation of the historic gathering. Their goal is to bridge the past and present, giving young musicians a platform to learn from veterans while celebrating music’s enduring ability to inspire togetherness. The concert is scheduled for June 14 at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Marah Louw, who has more than six decades of experience in showbiz, remains a vibrant presence in the industry at 74. She believes the concert is an opportunity for emerging artists to observe and absorb lessons from her generation. “We want young musicians to be a part of this concert, because we believe that they can take something from us that will help them to enjoy long careers, just like we have,” she explains. She stresses that success is built on learning from mistakes, maintaining professionalism, and sustaining passion over decades. Her career has paved the way for countless artists to achieve longevity in music.

Reflecting on her mentorship experiences, Marah recalls judging competitions like Shell Road To Fame, which helped launch careers for artists such as Ringo Madlingozi and Rebecca Malope. She highlights the importance of giving constructive feedback to nurture talent and guide performers toward professional success. Beyond music, she stresses that presentation and personal branding are crucial, noting that stage appearance contributes to an artist’s identity. She cites her performances with Miriam Makeba, where custom-designed outfits reinforced the artist’s unique brand.

Professionalism remains at the heart of Marah’s advice for musicians. She emphasizes respecting time, honoring commitments, and approaching every performance with discipline. According to her, consistency and respect for others in the industry are critical to sustaining a long and meaningful career. Marah’s career exemplifies how dedication, style, and mentorship can combine to leave a lasting impact on the music industry.

The Unity Concert will feature both seasoned performers and select emerging artists, creating a dynamic celebration of South African music. While Marah remains discreet about the full line-up, anticipation is high for the June event. The concert promises to honor the legacy of the 1985 performance while inspiring a new generation to carry forward the principles of artistry, professionalism, and creativity that Marah Louw and Sipho Mabuse embody.
