TOP 5 QGOM QUEENS IN 2019 – Gqom may be the most exhilarating and transmissible subgenre to come out of South Africa in recent years. Initially, it became apparent out of the townships of Durban, it has now circulated the fans from across South Africa. Since the genre is becoming more established and persists to elevate, so too do the key artists who represent to define the movement. These are the musicians who are defining gqom.

1.Babes Wodumo
Self-proclaimed Queen of Gqom Babes Wodumo came with a storm and released hits and secured herself a large audience. She has received nominations from the MTV Europe Music Awards in the Best African category and also from the BET Awards. Although we are aware she is not the original but she sure is she is the first to produce an iconic gqom anthem, she’s been a vessel in circulating it to international recognition.

2 Busiswa
Busiswa is a productive gqom hit producer, and through memorable associations with DJ Maphorisa, she has received an abundance of support from fans. Busiswa and DJ Maphorisa are a force, who together have assisted escalate and expound the sound of gqom, and her vernacular usage, including English, has created a platform to be relatable her to a wider fanbase.

3 Tipcee
Tipcee is a female gqom artist signed to DJ Tira’s music label, Afrotainment. She’s released a string of hits, which included collaborations with Distruction Boyz, Busiswa, Malume and DJ Tira herself. She also has a single on the Afrotainment Summer 2017 album.

4 Nuz Queen

is back by popular demand, following emancipating her latest EP titled Yung Busisa, with Sek’Shubile, as one of the top hits therein. She has been a controversy, accused of stealing a song Laze Lavuka iDimoni Lami, which ignited a volcanic debate due to assumptions that she had stolen the song from Ed Harris – a fellow artiste.

5. TDK, Thandeka Mkhwanazi

She is also known as the ‘gqom barbie’, not to be mistaken with Babes Wodumo, who is known as the ‘gqom queen’. the 26-year-old performer was signed by Universal Music in February this year and has been featured in gqom hits by Rude Boyz and DJ Maphorisa in the past year.
