DJ Maphorisa Compares His Record Label & The one Prince Kaybee & Lady Zamar Are Under: “I Empower & The World Doesn’t” – Numerous musicians place scoring a major label record deal at the tops of their to-do lists.

Having one of the large labels working on behalf of your music can be your ticket to the big time.

However, there are downsides to signing with a major label. When you’re trying to decide whether your ideal home is with an independent label or a major label, keep the pros and cons in mind.

DJ Maphorisa took to social media on the 24th of February to share how he empowers artists in comparison to most of the record labels. He stated a fraction of the artists he has worked with and revealed they all own their masters in comparison to the big names such as Prince Kaybee, Mafikizolo and Lady Zamar.

As part of a typical record deal, relinquishing your music’s “master rights” was part of how an artist secured the financial support of the label to pay for the recording and release of the record.

With the music master rights under their control, labels could then license the master recordings to third parties for placement in TV or film, use in commercials, or for use in another work (e.g. sampling) without the artists’ consent or monetary gain. Unless an artist had earned back all the money invested by the label in the recording and promotion of a record, all master license fees would stay with the label.

What do you think? DJ Maphorisa may be called many things, but if his statement is true, you have to admit, his heart appears to be in the right place, and more like him are a necessity in the music industry.
