Simphiwe Dana got the chance to record her fifth studio album, Bamako, with Mali singer and songwriter Salif Keita. The album is set to drop on the 24th of April. The artist says that she still can’t believe that she got to work with the legend.
Working with the songwriter has been an out of the world experience for Simphiwe Dana. “I still pinch myself. I got to work with Salif, a legend, a living legend. I am so honoured that he agreed to work with me” says Simphiwe Dana to ‘Move!’. The musician is known for her unique music that is inspired by the spiritual , political and revolutionary intuitions. The name, Bamako, is also the capital city of Mali. The album is mixed with the traditional Malian sound.
This is the sound that she has wanted to try out as an artist. She says that music is the reason why she’s still around. Throughout the 13 track album, love is the main theme and the heart of what the album is about. She also touches on South Africa’s history and it’s present. She also has a duet with Salif Keita.
