Gospel musician and television personality, Khaya Mthethwa, also has his own congregation. On Tuesday, the president announced that churches will be opened but there will be a limited number of people in churches. You would think the gospel singer would be happy to be going back with his congregation but he doesn’t think that opening churches is quite a good idea.
The issue of churches opening on level 3 had a lot of social media users divided. This had the hashtag #ChurchIsNotEssential trending on social media. Some people stated that people who want to pray must pray at home, some also said that opening churches will increase the risk of the coronavirus spreading. Khaya Mthethwa says, “I’m a church boy but this is irresponsible.” One tweep replied to khaya’s tweet, saying that the president is trying his best and must be given a break.
“I’m not attacking his leadership…I respect him…this is my personal opinion in a democratic country,” says Khaya Mthethwa. Some social media users agreed with the pastor. One tweep says, “But what these people don’t understand is that church was never closed, buildings were, and so should the buildings remain until we know exactly how we going to deal with this thing…” One tweep says, “I’m still enjoying online church. It’s safer for now…”
