Simphiwe Dana Opens Up About Being Queer And Her Frustration With Recent Killings

Twitter has been up-in-arms amidst killings of LGBTQ members these past few weeks. Protests down to Parliament, tweets expressing outrage and think pieces on our progression as a country have been flooding our timelines and now including a few words from local singer-songwriter.

Soon after Simphiwe came out last year, she was flooded with uplifting responses and was reminded that she wasn’t alone. However, her recent tweets have reminded us yet again, of how cruel the world can be towards the LGBTQ community and how far we still need to go. She tweets that queer people are human beings and that people need to rethink their hate towards the queer community especially if they are fond of h er and her music.

The tweets that follow are a reminder of how devastating the last weeks have been. Hashtags #JusticeForSpha, #JusticeForLulu and #RIPLonwabo are only few to name of recent inhumane killings. Dana shares more of her thoughts by stating that it does not feel normal.

A tweet from Lwazi Msomi is a reminder that queer people are human beings first, like everyone else.

These hate crimes are evident that queer people need to be protected from homophobic people that feel entitled enough to cause harm and even kill. A handful of people are reminded of how traumatizing it was to lose a loved one in a similar manner. A Twitter user recalls an incident that happened to an old friend.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to queer community and those affected during this time. We hope the justice system prevails sooner rather than later.
