Maskandi powerhouse Khuzani “Khuba” Mpungose has once again proven that he is the undisputed king of the genre, cementing his place at the top with multiple new accolades under his belt. The 35-year-old musician from Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, was honoured with two platinum and three gold plaques by Universal Music during a prestigious ceremony held at their Johannesburg offices on Wednesday, 14 May.
Known for his electrifying performances and chart-topping hits, Khuzani was awarded a double platinum plaque for his 2020 album Isipoki Esingafi, as well as a platinum plaque for his 2023 hit single Umjolo Lowo. In addition, his 2021 album Inja Nogodo was recognised with a gold plaque—solidifying his consistent dominance in the music scene.
His most recent album, Angidlali Nezingane, released in 2024, has been another massive success. The album features popular tracks like Imbongolo and the title track Angidlali Nezingane, both of which earned gold status. These achievements not only showcase his unmatched popularity but also reinforce his continued relevance and innovation in the evolving Maskandi landscape.
Khuzani, a multi-award-winning artist who has scooped several South African Music Awards (SAMAs) over the years, expressed heartfelt gratitude to his fans and supporters. “Without the support I’m getting from fans and the Blue Nation, I would not receive this big honour,” he said. “It is not a secret—if you are talking about a top-selling musician in Maskandi music, you are talking about me.”
The Blue Nation, Khuzani’s passionate and loyal fanbase, has been instrumental in his success, filling venues and pushing his music to the top of the charts. With millions of followers across the country, his influence stretches far beyond the traditional Maskandi audience.
Having worked with Universal Music for the past eight years, Khuzani also took time to thank the label for their continued support and belief in his vision. He paid special tribute to his manager Mthokozisi Zuma and his dedicated studio team who help craft his hits.
“I would like to thank my keyboard players Jay Jay Mbuthuma and Phathaphatha Ngcobo, my lead guitarist Falabo Khuzwayo, my bass guitarists Dokzen Ntshingila and Celumusa Zuma, and my concertina players Nyonemhlophe Jali and Thuthani Ndlovu. Now, we are reaping the fruits of our hard work,” he said proudly.
Khuzani added that the newly earned plaques will take pride of place in his entertainment area at home, where they will serve as a reminder of how far he and his team have come.
As Angidlali Nezingane continues to soar and his singles dominate airwaves, Khuzani asked his fans to keep supporting him and the Maskandi genre. With such remarkable milestones and unwavering fan support, there’s no doubt that Khuba’s legacy is still growing—one hit at a time.
