Universal Music South Africa Shines Spotlight on Maskandi and Celebrates Khuzani’s 15-Year Milestone

Universal Music Group South Africa paid tribute to the rich heritage of Maskandi music with a vibrant celebration held on May 14th at their Rosebank offices in Johannesburg. The UMG Maskandi Showcase brought together the genre’s trailblazers and rising stars for an unforgettable night of music and cultural pride.
At the heart of the event was a special tribute to Khuzani, one of the most influential figures in modern Maskandi. Marking his 15 years in the music industry, Khuzani was honoured for his lasting impact and incredible achievements. During the evening, he was awarded five plaques:
- 3 Gold Certifications for his album Inja Nogodo and singles Imbongolo and Angidlali Nezingane
- 1 Platinum Certification for Umjolo Lowo
- 1 Double Platinum Certification for Ijele
A visibly moved Khuzani thanked Universal Music, his fans, and the media for the unwavering support that has carried him through his career.
The showcase also highlighted the next generation of Maskandi talent. Performances from emerging duo Amasinamuva Amasha, rising newcomer uMlabalaba, and a standout live set from Mbuzeni kept the energy high throughout the night. Mbuzeni stunned the crowd with his signature guitar flair and a genre-bending Maskandi rendition of Rihanna’s Diamonds.
This event reaffirmed Universal Music’s dedication to championing African music and preserving local cultural heritage. As Maskandi continues to evolve and grow in popularity, UMG is placing real investment behind its artists and the genre’s future.
