Matthew Charles Returns After Two-Year Hiatus with New Single “Te Amo” – A Fresh, Emotionally Charged Pop Anthem

South African singer-songwriter Matthew Charles is back on the music scene after a two-year break, delivering a fresh sound with his latest single, “Te Amo.” The track marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in his career, showcasing his growth as an artist and his commitment to connecting with fans through heartfelt, catchy pop music.

“I’ve always thought saying ‘I love you’ in Spanish sounds more meaningful and sexy,” Matthew explains. “It also rolls off the tongue and makes for a really catchy chorus. I wanted to create something fun, but still emotionally charged — something people could feel and sing along to.”

“Te Amo” originated from a simple chorus that producer Helena Bowie crafted in her bedroom. Together with co-writers Matthew May and Sophia Joelle, Matthew Charles helped shape the song into a full-scale pop anthem. The trio focused on creating a sound that was both big and intimate.

“We wanted it to sound big—almost anthem-like but still intimate and personal,” Matthew says. “The first version that came back from Matthew May was exactly what I’d imagined in my head.”

Now, fully dedicated to his music career, Matthew is focused on delivering new content consistently, aiming to release a track every three weeks as he prepares to launch his debut EP, What’s on Your Mind.

“‘Te Amo’ is just the start. I have a few collaborations in the works with local artist Naomi Grace and Colombian artist JHOAN,” he reveals. Fans can also look forward to two additional EPs set for release in 2026.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, Matthew’s love for music was nurtured early on. “My mom taught me to play ‘Chopsticks’ on a piano my grandmother gave us before I even started school,” he recalls. “Since then, music has been my therapy. Whether I make a career out of it or not, it’s something I’ll always do.”

His sound is a heartfelt blend of pop influenced by artists like One Direction, Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, and more recently, Noah Kahan and Gracie Abrams. This eclectic mix lends Matthew’s music a unique emotional depth while remaining accessible and catchy.
