South Africa’s Flash Rock Powerhouse Marene Turns Up the Emotion with New Single “Finchie”

South Africa’s dynamic rock band Marene is making waves again with the release of their deeply personal new single “Finchie” and its cinematic music video. Known for their high-energy performances and signature Flash Rock sound, the band dives into raw emotion with this synth-laced, retro-pop anthem that captures the bittersweet ache of unrequited teenage love.
“Finchie” stands out with its glossy synth-driven guitars, soaring choruses, and a nostalgic vibe that transports listeners into a neon-lit, dreamy world of longing and hope. The music video perfectly complements this mood, inviting fans into a fever dream that reflects the song’s themes of youthful desire and emotional vulnerability.
The track’s story is as authentic as it is relatable. Frontman Tyler Duggan reveals that “Finchie” originated when he was just seventeen, alone in his bedroom. What began with the enigmatic name “Finchie” evolved through many versions into a heartfelt boy-meets-girl narrative that ultimately explores the loneliness and complexity of unrequited love. Keyboardist and backing vocalist Maronay Todkill describes the song as capturing “the sound of a young heart grappling with something as vast as love,” highlighting its purity and naive earnestness — the kind only first love can bring.
Bassist Ozzey Padayachee calls “Finchie” Marene’s most vulnerable track to date, a significant shift from their usual flashy, high-octane style. He explains, “It’s like loving the idea of someone more than the person — that modern Pygmalion and Galatea story.” Guitarist Arian Helm adds that every lyric and chord resonates with the universal feelings of longing and vulnerability many have experienced but rarely express openly. Drummer Skye Nagel sums it up perfectly, likening the song to a cinematic opening scene you know won’t end happily, yet you can’t look away.
The release of “Finchie” is timed to coincide with Marene’s live debut of the single at WinterFest’25 on Saturday, 26 July, where the band will bring their trademark high-energy stage presence to the festival crowd.
“Finchie” is the lead single from Marene’s upcoming EP “Nevermine”, set to drop on Friday, 1 August. This five-track project pushes the band into exciting new sonic territory, blending hard-hitting rock anthems, poignant ballads, and bold reinterpretations of classics with their unmistakable Flash Rock flair.
Among the standout tracks is a synth-sparkle reinvention of Sabrina’s “Boys (Summertime Love)”, along with a dark, alt-rock take on The Church’s “Reptile”. These covers underscore Marene’s willingness to experiment and showcase their versatility. Frontman Tyler Duggan describes the EP as “our boldest detour yet,” a creative journey that moves between edgy rock, emotional ballads, and reimagined favorites from their catalogue. Keyboardist Maronay Todkill calls it “a what-could-have-been moment reimagined,” while Padayachee highlights how the diversity of the tracks reflects the band’s evolving identity.
Since their explosive debut in 2018, Marene has carved a distinctive niche in South Africa’s rock landscape, mixing thunderous riffs with shimmering synth textures and theatrical live performances. Their dynamic presence has earned them appearances on national TV shows like Expresso and coveted festival slots at WinterFest and RAMFest, building a reputation for full-scale sensory spectacles.
With “Finchie” and the upcoming “Nevermine” EP, Marene continue to redefine their sound while tapping into the emotional core that connects deeply with fans. As they push the boundaries of Flash Rock, they invite listeners to join them on this bold, heartfelt musical journey.
