Salif Keita Pulls Out Of Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek Due To Medical Emergency

Fans heading to the Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek this weekend will unfortunately no longer get to see legendary Malian artist Salif Keita perform in person, after organisers confirmed his withdrawal from the festival due to a sudden illness.
In an official statement released by the festival, organisers said Keita is unable to travel to South Africa after requiring an emergency medical procedure, forcing him to step away from the highly anticipated inaugural African edition of the globally celebrated jazz event.
Despite the disappointing news, festivalgoers will still get to experience a special performance connected to Keita’s legacy. Organisers confirmed that his band will still perform as scheduled on Saturday, delivering the music and repertoire that had been prepared for the occasion.
Adding a heartfelt touch to the tribute, Aicha Mariko and Fatoumata Soubeiga — who Keita reportedly considers his daughters — will take to the stage to honour the iconic musician and keep his spirit present at the festival.
Festival Organisers Send Well Wishes
The Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek team also shared their support for the celebrated African music icon, saying they wish him a full and speedy recovery and hope to welcome him back to South Africa in the near future.
Salif Keita’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by fans who were looking forward to seeing one of Africa’s most revered voices live. Widely known as the “Golden Voice of Africa,” Keita has played a monumental role in shaping the continent’s musical legacy, with a career spanning decades and a catalogue that has influenced generations.
Festival Still Set To Deliver A Strong Debut Weekend
Even with the late change to the lineup, organisers have assured attendees that the Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek will continue with a strong and diverse programme of artists across the weekend.
The festival marks a major cultural moment as it brings the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival brand to African soil for the very first time, with Franschhoek serving as the backdrop for what promises to be a landmark live music experience.
For many music lovers, the weekend remains an important celebration of jazz, African excellence, and global musical heritage — with Keita’s tribute performance now expected to be one of the most emotional highlights on the schedule.
As anticipation builds, all eyes remain on Franschhoek for what is shaping up to be a memorable debut edition.
