Buhlebendalo Mda Embraces Freedom and Growth After Leaving The Soil

Buhlebendalo Mda, the former vocalist of award-winning a cappella group The Soil, says going solo has given her the freedom she always wanted. The 36-year-old singer from Protea North, Soweto, believes stepping away from the group allowed her to find her true voice and identity as an artist.

She explained that her solo career helped her feel less guarded as a queer, Black, spiritually gifted woman in South Africa. According to her, branching out of a group created space to explore the many women and voices within her. “My solo has helped me realise that I am more than just a singer, I am a brand,” she said.

Buhle first rose to prominence as part of The Soil, a group formed in 2003 that popularised the kasi soul sound by blending harmonies, beatboxing and traditional influences. The Soil went on to win multiple South African Music Awards, perform at sold-out shows across the country and tour internationally, sharing stages with Robert Glasper and the Black Eyed Peas.

While her past success remains significant, Buhle views her solo journey as an opportunity to tell different stories. She now performs with what she calls her #FamBand, a team she says enhances the sound of her storytelling. “The Soil will always be part of my journey. The difference now is that I get to tell other stories,” she explained.

Her mission extends beyond music. Buhle has launched a mentorship programme, #AfterskulIsAfterschool, which focuses on nurturing high school choirs. She hopes the initiative will gain support from the Department of Education to restore dignity and unity in schools. She also envisions expanding the programme to other African countries.

In 2019, she released her debut solo album Chosi, which highlighted her versatility and spiritual depth. The project was praised for blending African traditions with fresh sounds while staying true to her roots.

Today, Buhle describes her path as one of healing, growth and empowerment. She avoids comparing her group work with her solo music, saying her focus is on telling new stories and living freely. “I’m inspiring others to do the same,” she said.
