Kaylow Honors Late DJ Sumbody with New Single “Respect”

Singer Kaylow, born Kelello Segoana, is set to release a heartfelt new single, “Respect,” in collaboration with the late DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka. Sumbody passed away in 2022, leaving a lasting impact on South Africa’s music scene.

Kaylow revealed that the song came together after the success of his hit Pikki Pikki. “Sumbody called me out to the studio and suggested we rock a track that is a bit more up-tempo than the ones we had done in the past,” he said.

He described the release as more than just a song. “This release is me paying my last respect to my friend and a pioneer,” Kaylow explained.

“Respect” will feature two versions. One retains the original sound they created in the studio, designed for straight dance, while the second is an updated rendition embracing the latest amapiano trends. Kaylow explained the song’s theme: “It’s about what we as men require from our women. It basically says I want to marry you and all I want from you is respect.”

The collaboration carries deep personal significance. “The song carries that energy he embodied and whenever I perform it, the reaction I get from the crowd makes me feel like he’s still around,” Kaylow said.

Reflecting on the creative process, he added: “The concept of the song may have been of mutual agreement, but I recall it being his idea. I chose to release both versions because the sound was his signature. I hope his fans, friends, and family will remember him in a good way and feel the party spirit he always brought.”

This release follows a major career milestone for Kaylow, whose hit single 24 Hours recently achieved triple platinum status, solidifying his position in modern soul and house music in South Africa.

“When I listen to Respect, I hear more than just a song. I hear a moment in time with Sumbody — a friend, a brother, a visionary. I also hear my own survival and the gift of being here to share this music. This release is about gratitude, energy, and keeping the joy of collaboration alive,” he said.

“Respect” is set to honor Sumbody’s legacy while showcasing Kaylow’s continued influence on South African music.
