Dladla Mshunqisi Returns Usuku Lomshunqo Festival to KwaMashu Following Backlash

Dladla Mshunqisi, the 34-year-old South African music star, faced criticism from KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal residents after moving his annual Usuku Lomshunqo Music Festival to the Durban CBD in 2024. The festival, which has deep roots in KwaMashu, sparked complaints from locals who felt displaced by the change.
Responding to the backlash, Dladla confirmed that the 2025 edition of the festival will return closer to home. It is scheduled for 29 November at Princess Magogo Stadium, just a few kilometers from his residence.
Dladla explained that the 2024 move to the CBD was intended to make the festival more central for attendees. He acknowledged, however, that KwaMashu residents felt a strong sense of ownership over the event. “KwaMashu people own the festival. They complained to me for taking it out, even writing complaints on social media. The festival started in KwaMashu and KwaMashu people take it as their festival. It was the first time taking it out of KwaMashu and I can say that many people from KwaMashu didn’t like that decision,” he said.
He also shared plans to address potential weather disruptions. “I’m sure it is my luck, blessings or bad luck because it normally rains at many of my festivals. So, I am now prepared to protect attendees from the rain with a big marque,” Dladla said.
The 2025 line-up promises to bring high energy to the event, featuring performances by DJ Tira, Zee Nxumalo, Zakwe, Distruction Boyz, and Danger. Dladla expressed confidence that the festival will entertain attendees and restore its connection with the KwaMashu community.
The return of Usuku Lomshunqo to KwaMashu highlights the importance of community support for local cultural events and shows Dladla’s commitment to honoring the festival’s roots.
