Nomfundo Moh: From KwaZulu-Natal Farm Girl to Afro-Pop Sensation

Nomfundo Moh has been making waves in the South African music scene since her breakthrough single ‘Lilizela’ in 2022. The track earned her widespread recognition and positioned her as a rising star, leading to collaborations with top artists such as Ami Faku and Sha Sha.
Her latest release, ‘Umathandana Wami’, a collaboration with Shenge Wasehlankosi, fuses Maskandi with Afro-pop. The song quickly resonated with fans, generating over a million radio impressions in just one week. Nomfundo played an active role in writing the track and credits her team for helping secure the ideal feature to complement her vision.
The success of the single has strengthened Nomfundo’s confidence as an artist. She shared that the impressive radio performance motivates her to continue creating music that comes from the heart. “I have an idea of what my people love to hear, and I will follow that direction to achieve or create beautiful songs,” she said.
Nomfundo values radio as a key platform for reaching listeners across all generations. While social media engages her younger audience, she acknowledges the importance of traditional media to attract older fans who may not be active online. “The older generation is not into social media, and the radio is there to make sure no generation is left behind when it comes to new music,” she explained.
Creativity for Nomfundo comes from a combination of personal reflection and inspiration from her peers in the industry. She emphasizes that her authenticity has been central to building her brand and connecting with her audience.
Her music often blends modern Afro-soul with traditional elements, aiming to create songs that resonate across generations. “The aim is to create music that is relatable to both the old and new generations. I believe I’m an old soul in a new body, and that works for me in achieving this sound and receiving all the desired audience,” Nomfundo said.
Looking ahead, Nomfundo plans to release an album titled ‘Farm Julia’ next year, celebrating her journey from a farm girl in KwaZulu-Natal to a celebrated artist. She hopes the project will reflect her roots while appealing to a broad audience.
Beyond her current work, Nomfundo aspires to collaborate with international stars like Alicia Keys and Ayra Starr, while also mentoring and working with upcoming talent. Her commitment to authenticity, musical diversity, and connecting with fans ensures her continued rise in the industry.
