Umafikizolo’s “Uyocengwa Ngunyoko” Emerges as a Summer Hit and Maskandi Sensation

The summer music scene is heating up, and Umafikizolo’s “Uyocengwa Ngunyoko” is positioning itself as one of the standout tracks heading into 2026. The song has already racked up 14 million streams on Spotify and 18 million views on YouTube since its release three months ago, signaling widespread popularity across platforms.

The 24-year-old artist, Khethukuthula Mhlongo from Mnambithi, KwaZulu-Natal, released his EP, also titled Uyocengwa Ngunyoko, in July. The EP showcases his ability to fuse traditional Zulu storytelling with contemporary sounds, a combination that has resonated strongly with listeners.

“Uyocengwa Ngunyoko” is not only thriving online but also climbing radio charts, reflecting broad appeal. The song’s catchy beats have made it a viral sensation on TikTok, where young fans are creating content inspired by its rhythms.

This year’s South African Music Awards (Samas) recognized Umafikizolo’s impact, nominating him for Best Maskandi Album alongside established artists such as Khuzani, Imithente, Phuzekhemisi, and Ntencane. The nomination cements his rising status in the genre and highlights the continued relevance of Maskandi music.

Maskandi, which originated in KwaZulu-Natal in the early to mid-20th century among Zulu migrant workers, has evolved into one of South Africa’s most influential music styles. It blends storytelling with rhythmic guitar and modern production, maintaining cultural roots while appealing to younger audiences.

Spotify data shows that nearly half of Maskandi listeners are under 35, many following the Bhinca Nation playlist. The playlist, dedicated to the genre’s hottest tracks, averages over two million plays monthly and has grown by more than 3,000% since 2022. Umafikizolo’s hit contributes to this growth, showing that Maskandi continues to thrive across digital platforms.

With its streaming success, radio popularity, and social media virality, “Uyocengwa Ngunyoko” is a strong contender for one of the defining songs of the summer and a track that could carry momentum into the new year.
