Limpopo-Born DJ Darque Gears Up for Global Breakthrough With Shimza

Limpopo-born DJ and producer Darque is preparing for what he calls the biggest record of his career, set to drop next summer in collaboration with South African house heavyweight Shimza. At 34, he is already a dominant presence on the festive season circuit, bringing energy and precision to every set he plays.

December is a relentless month for Darque, who spends most of the time on the road. He admits missing family gatherings during Christmas and New Year’s. “I can’t remember the last time I spent Christmas at home. I get emotional when I think about it — my family is somewhere out there without me,” he says. Despite this, he is focused on building a global career. “I’m still working hard. SA — yes — but I want more. My kids have to eat. I can’t afford to say, ‘This December I’m chilling.’ I feel like at 44 I’ll start doing that. I’ve got 10 years to build.”

Darque and his team have developed a “double-barrel strategy” aimed at both the South African and European markets. He recently released Sondela on an English label and has more international tracks in the pipeline. “The world wants SA music. They love us. I need to do it right, collaborate with the right people, and play in the right rooms,” he explains.

His upcoming project with Shimza is a standout, a remake of a Coldplay classic cleared for release next summer. Darque describes the track as the “biggest record” of his life, signaling a major step in his international ambitions.

Reflecting on his journey, Darque says his growth has been shaped by hard work and perseverance. “Nothing comes easy for me; God designed me like that. When you don’t get stuff by luck and work hard, you can brag about it, you can love it, and you protect it. The sweat and tears aren’t easy.”

Darque is also a key part of the Sunset Summer Tour, performing for the third consecutive year. He crafts his sets to match the vibe of the crowd, often starting with a chilled, sunset-friendly sound before building energy. “I want people to enjoy the music and ease into the night,” he says.

The audience response remains a highlight for Darque. He observes that women, in particular, respond enthusiastically to his music. “They want to hear fresh stuff. They dance to almost anything you dish out. The atmosphere was really great. I truly enjoyed it.”

As the festive season heats up, Darque continues to solidify his status as a premier South African DJ while laying the groundwork for a global breakthrough with Shimza and upcoming international collaborations.
