Acclaimed Vocalist and Storyteller Nobuhle Cements Her Place with New Album ‘Imvula: Rebirth’

After the emotional success of Imvula, acclaimed vocalist and storyteller Nobuhle Khuzwayo returns with IMVULA: REBIRTH, a deeply spiritual and emotionally expansive rebirth of the original body of work. More than a deluxe edition or continuation, REBIRTH represents transformation: a journey through identity, vulnerability, ancestral memory, sacrifice, healing, and survival.
The project unites a formidable lineup of African music heavyweights including Kabza De Small, Young Stunna, Nkosazana Daughter, Professor, Essa Kay, Mr Lu, Goon Flavour, Murumba Pitch and Josiah De Disciple, each bringing their own sonic identity into a project rooted in soul and purpose.
At the spiritual center of the album stands “Isigubhu Sika Gogo”, translated as “My Grandmother’s Drum.” Nobuhle describes the record as one of the most vulnerable moments of her career. “It’s about identity, memory, my bloodline, and my own self-sacrifice to the world,” says Nobuhle. “It is when I was most vulnerable.”
The song serves as the emotional heartbeat of the album, a reflection of ancestry, womanhood, pain, and spiritual inheritance. Across IMVULA: REBIRTH, Nobuhle opens herself to audiences in ways never heard before, transforming personal experiences into timeless music. Tracks such as Igama alongside Mr Lu become affirmations of faith and endurance. “It shows how difficult it has been to be here and continue staying not just alive, but alive with purpose. With ‘Igama’, the name, I am alive.”
On Ithonga with Goon Flavour, Nobuhle delivers a praise song to her people and the strength they have poured into her life, while Ngibulawa Nguwe featuring Murumba Pitch explores deeply personal territory around love and emotional vulnerability.
“It is the first time in my career I have taken a personal relationship complication and turned it into a song.” The rebirth of Imvula is not only sonic, it is spiritual. It captures Nobuhle’s evolution as an artist, woman, and vessel of African storytelling. Through powerful collaborations, live instrumentation, ancestral textures, and emotionally charged songwriting, the album bridges traditional spirituality with modern African soundscapes.
With contributions from some of the continent’s most celebrated voices and producers, IMVULA: REBIRTH stands as a bold reminder that healing, memory, and rebirth can exist in the same breath. This is not just an album. It is a return to self. A prayer. A storm. A rebirth.
