Lindi Ngonelo Releases “In a Man’s World,” Reflecting Her Journey as a Woman in Music

South African pianist, musical director, composer, and educator Lindi Ngonelo has released her latest project, In a Man’s World, a body of work inspired by her experiences navigating a music space often dominated by men. The release, which she produced herself, marks a significant moment in her career, reflecting both personal growth and artistic evolution.

Ngonelo explained that the concept of the project grew out of her own journey in jazz and popular music. “The concept came from my personal experiences as a woman in a space that is often dominated by men, especially in jazz. Over the years, I’ve had to find my own voice and learn to stand firm in it.”

She said the album reflects a long process of learning to take up space. “‘In a Man’s World’ is really about owning that space with confidence and grace. It is very reflective of my journey. The challenges, the growth, and the moments of doubt that ended up turning into self-assurance are all there. The music carries those emotions.”

Each track ties back to a personal experience. “Every song feels like a chapter where I had to remind myself that I belong here, just as I am,” she noted.

Ngonelo described a creative process that varies with each song. “Sometimes I will get a musical idea while doing something random, like buying groceries. Other times, I hear a set of chords in my head, and I add a melody. Sometimes all I hear is a drum groove, and I build from that until it becomes a complete track.”

Recording the album was an equally important experience. “The studio sessions were really special. Working with musicians who understood and respected the vision made the recording process amazing. There was a strong sense of trust and synergy in the room. Everyone brought their best selves,” she said.

Ngonelo believes the energy from those sessions comes through in the final sound. She hopes listeners connect with the message of the album. “I hope people feel seen and inspired when they listen. I want them to take away a sense of courage and to show up fully as themselves, no matter what space they are in.”

She also sees In a Man’s World as a turning point in her career. “For me, this project marks a new beginning. It is the first time I have stepped out with a clear sense of who I am as an artist. I am excited to keep creating from that honest place.”

With a strong foundation in jazz and popular music, Ngonelo has built a respected presence in South Africa’s music scene through performance, mentorship, and work in jazz education. In a Man’s World underscores her artistic vision and signals the direction she plans to follow, blending personal reflection with musical mastery.
