Tipcee Opens Up About Anxiety and Returns to Gqom With New EP ‘Untamed’

Gqom sensation Tipcee, born Thobeka Ndaba from Umlazi in southern Durban, has revealed the anxiety battle that caused her sudden disappearance from the music scene. Known for hits like Iscathulo, Bhampa, and Malume, Tipcee earned the nickname Queen of Umlazi as her tracks dominated South African airwaves from 2017.
Fans were left puzzled after the Afrotainment artist released her single Do It Again and seemingly vanished. Now, Tipcee has returned with a highly anticipated four-track EP titled Untamed, ready to share the story behind her absence. The singer described being trapped in a creative nightmare that even concerned her mentor and boss DJ Tira. Despite a burning desire to record, Tipcee found herself unable to create music.
“I was going through personal stuff. I don’t know how to explain it, but it was not a breakup. There were moments when I felt motivated to go to the studio and record, but as soon as I stepped in and stood behind the mic, my mind would go completely blank. It was frustrating because I couldn’t understand what was happening,” she said. The situation escalated until Tipcee sought professional help. She was diagnosed with anxiety, a revelation that brought relief but also new fears about her evolving musical style and fan reception.
“I noticed DJ Tira was worried, and many people were also concerned about me. Now I’m back,” she added. With her challenges addressed, Tipcee is making a strong comeback. The Untamed EP signals a new chapter, and the artist promises fans more energetic Gqom hits, including a new single scheduled for February 2026. Tipcee’s return marks a triumphant moment in South African music, highlighting her resilience and commitment to her craft while opening a new era for the Queen of Umlazi.
