Theo Kgosinkwe’s Bold Solo Move: From Mafikizolo to 3-Step Innovation

Since rising to fame in the late 1990s as one-half of Mafikizolo, Theo Kgosinkwe has become a household name in South African music. The group’s legacy includes award-winning performances, chart-topping hits, and collaborations with some of the country’s top artists. Now, Theo is stepping into a new chapter of his career as a solo artist with his independent label, 360 Music Factory, exploring the emerging 3-Step sound while collaborating with fresh talent.
Theo reflects on his journey, describing his time in Mafikizolo as monumental. “Being in Mafikizolo was huge – performing, winning awards, collaborating… My solo projects were incredible too, with number one radio hits. Returning as a solo artist and record label owner gives me even more control over my brand and music,” he says. Starting in 1997 with Kalawa Jazmee Records, he witnessed an era where black stars were ascending across music, television, and sports, a generation he is proud to have been part of.
Known for his versatility, Theo explains that genre boundaries have never limited him. Mafikizolo’s sound has always evolved, and as a songwriter, he has consistently embraced experimentation. His move into 3-Step reflects this approach, combining fresh energy from emerging producers with the expertise of seasoned collaborators. The goal is to create music that resonates both creatively and on the dance floor.
His new single, Umdanso, is built for movement. “It’s a dance track through and through. I love dancing, and when I collaborated with Zeh McGeba and another producer, we wanted to create something that moves people. It’s all about the energy, rhythm, and connecting with the dance floor,” Theo explains.
Working with young producers and songwriters brings a fresh perspective. Theo highlights how collaborations are mutually beneficial. “They know the trends, the club scene, and the culture. I learn from them, and they get to work with someone experienced while tapping into my audience. It’s inspiring when they’re in the studio; they often say: ‘We’ve always wanted to work with you.’ It’s humbling because they see us as legends, even though I don’t think I’m that old.”
Theo’s independent label, 360 Music Factory, reflects his desire for full creative and business control. The label focuses on recording, publishing, and educating young artists about the industry. “Being independent allows me to own my masters, direct my music, and control budgets, marketing, and PR. Running a record label helps me gain experience to sign other artists in the future and understand what it takes,” he explains.
Outside the studio, Theo finds balance in family life. “It’s beautiful. When you find someone you can laugh with, joke with, and be yourself around, it makes life easy. Family life with the kids is a blessing. My wife is always pranking me, and people get a good laugh on social media. She keeps scoring, and I keep saying people must pray for me. I’m working on a bigger way to get her back.” Theo Kgosinkwe’s solo journey signals a new era of creativity and independence. With 360 Music Factory and his exploration of 3-Step, he continues to push boundaries while mentoring the next generation of South African talent.
