Since lockdown began, a lot of artists have had a tough time in terms of finances. Some of them are still not out of the mud yet with their financial difficulties. South African DJ Shimza went on social media to call out sport, arts and culture Nathi Mthethwa.
The musician states that not enough has been done in terms of assistance for South African musicians. The artist says that h submitted a proposal to minister for artists to be able to go on with their events on television. “Submitted a proposal to Minister [Nathi Mthethwa] for us to be able to afford to continue with events on tv so we could continue paying artists and people in the technical space and got no response. Now we out scrapping for work, people are gathering and the virus is spreading,” says Shimza. The artist says this would mean less people would go out to see their fave perform because they would be watching them.
He says that this would have the chance of cutting down on gatherings. “This would potentially cut down on gatherings but at the same time not take from the artists income because we also need to work. Many might think entertainment is just games but many lives are suffering and are not being recognised, [we trying] but we need assistance,” says Shimza. Recently, Simphiwe Dana called out the minister and his spokesperson Masechaba Ndlovu.
