Thomas Paul Confronts Vulnerability with Soul-Stirring Second Single ‘Heartache’

After making a memorable debut with Holding On, rising singer-songwriter Thomas Paul returns with a powerful new release titled Heartache — now streaming on all major platforms. The track sees the emerging artist dig even deeper into emotional terrain, delivering a raw and moving reflection on inner struggle, loneliness, and the quiet resilience required to keep going.

Heartache is more than a follow-up single — it’s a journal entry turned anthem. Written during one of the most difficult chapters in his life, Thomas channels his personal pain into a haunting yet hopeful soundscape. The song explores the mental loop of feeling stuck in one’s thoughts, a state he says he knows all too well.

“This song was difficult to write,” Thomas admits. “All my music comes from a place of truth. ‘Heartache’ was born during a time when I felt completely lost in my own head, and songwriting became my only outlet — a way to make sense of what I was feeling.”

The track’s origin is as spontaneous as it is poetic. One quiet night at the piano, Thomas recorded the first verse as a voice note. But the full composition would unfold over six months — written in fragments, only when he was ready to revisit its emotional weight.

Produced in collaboration with Devon Murray and Aidin Nortje — known for their work with artists like Ben Rodrigues, Booshle G, and David Derman — Heartache carries a depth that’s both sonic and spiritual. The trio sculpted a sound that reflects the gravity of the lyrics, layering gospel-inspired choirs with a steady heartbeat-like rhythm that drives the song forward.

From its symbolic opening pulse to the echoing pre-chorus, Heartache is meticulously crafted. When a haunting choir repeats the words “home” and “alone”, it underscores the duality of longing for connection while confronting the harsh reality of isolation.

But the most striking revelation is that Thomas isn’t addressing anyone else in the song — he’s speaking to himself. “It’s a conversation with a version of me I didn’t know how to face at the time,” he says.

With Heartache, Thomas Paul solidifies his place as a compelling new voice in South Africa’s music scene — one unafraid to show the cracks, the hurt, and the healing. The song resonates as both a catharsis and a message: that it’s okay to not be okay, and even in the darkness, there’s strength in choosing to keep going.

“We all struggle,” he says. “It’s part of being human. This song is my way of saying it’s okay to talk about it — or sing about it — in whatever way feels right for you.”

Heartache is available now on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and all major streaming platforms.
