Skye Wanda: The Durban-Born Artist Redefining South African Music

South African women have long shaped the country’s music scene, breaking barriers and inspiring new generations. Among them, Skye Wanda stands out as one of the most fearless voices, blending genres, pushing boundaries, and carving out a lasting legacy.

Born Nonhle Mhlongo in Chesterville, Durban, Wanda grew up surrounded by music. “Everyone at home could sing,” she recalls. “My grandmother, my brothers, my sisters… music was always there. I started singing very young because it was part of who we were.” Music was never just a pastime; it was a family tradition that laid the foundation for her career.

Her first major breakthrough came in 2015 when she auditioned for Idols South Africa and reached the Top 16. Circumstances forced her to leave the competition, but the experience ignited her determination. “My journey’s been up and down,” she admits. “There have been great moments, and moments where I thought, ‘I’m done with music altogether.’ But I always find myself back because, for me, it is more than talent. It is my ministry.”

That resilience has defined her career. Known for her powerhouse vocals and emotive storytelling, Wanda has built a reputation for being bold, versatile, and authentic. She describes herself as “kind-hearted but feisty, ambitious, a loving mother, and sometimes just plain goofy.” This blend of strength and relatability has won her respect in the industry and a loyal following among fans.

In recent years, Wanda has taken her artistry a step further by adding DJing to her skill set. Far from being a detour, it was a deliberate move to connect more deeply with dance music. “The reason I started DJing was to expand my skills,” she says. “Ever since I started going hard on dance music, I have been having the time of my life. I have found a home and I am staying. DJing is an integral part of that culture, so I decided to give it a go. It has changed how I view and experience music completely.”

She explains how learning to beat-match, count bars, and experiment with drops has not only sharpened her technical side but also improved her production skills. For Wanda, DJing is more than performance; it is immersion in the culture that drives her music.

What makes Skye Wanda stand out is not just her talent but her ability to evolve. From a young singer in Chesterville to a national talent show contestant, and now an artist, songwriter, producer, and DJ, she continues to redefine what it means to be a South African woman in music.

Her story is one of persistence, reinvention, and purpose. For Skye Wanda, music is not only a career but a calling. And as she continues to explore new sounds and inspire others, she is proving that she is not just here to sing. She is here to lead, create, and leave a mark on South African music.
