Thandiswa Mazwai and Goldmax Dominate the 31st Annual South African Music Awards

The 31st annual South African Music Awards (Samas) took place on Sunday night at the Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg. This year, the awards adopted a hybrid format, blending live and digital elements to reach a wider audience.
Amid a challenging sponsorship climate and limited funding, the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) opted for a streamlined and digitally driven approach, moving away from the traditional large-scale gala. The event carried the theme “Flowers For Those Who Keep Our Nation Singing,” placing the spotlight on musicians while they could still receive recognition for their contributions.
Two artists stood out during the evening: Thandiswa Mazwai and Goldmax.
Mazwai’s album Sankofa was among the most nominated projects of the night. She took home several key awards, including Best Produced Album, Best Engineered Album, and Best African Adult Contemporary Album. She was also named Female Artist of the Year. Sankofa received five nominations in total, positioning Mazwai among top contenders alongside Black Motion and Kelvin Momo.
Following her wins, Mazwai expressed gratitude on social media: she thanked her support system, collaborators, co-producers, musicians from the United States, Dakar, and South Africa, radio stations, festivals, and her label. She also teased upcoming music from the sessions of Sankofa, promising new releases early next year.
Goldmax, born Zipho Mthembu, also made a significant impact. His album Play at Your Own Risk, a collaboration with Blacks Jnr, won Album of the Year and Best Gqom Album. He was additionally awarded Male Artist of the Year. Known for pushing boundaries in the gqom music scene, Goldmax celebrated his wins on social media, hinting at new music while acknowledging his triple Samas achievement.
Unati Gwija, the awards spokesperson, reflected on the night, praising the artists, judges, and sponsors. She described the 31st Samas as a night that solidified its position as South Africa’s premier music event, highlighting standout performances and notable wins.
The 2025 Samas demonstrated resilience and creativity, honoring artists who continue to shape South Africa’s musical landscape while embracing innovative approaches to event production. Mazwai and Goldmax emerged as the evening’s defining figures, celebrated for their artistry, impact, and influence.
