It has claimed so many lives and continues to do so.

Social media has been in mourning, the nation hit with the sad news of the passing of Idols runner up, Thami Shobede. The 31-year-old had carved quite an impressive music career post his memorable stint on Idols in the year 2016.

Many gathered for his memorial, the cause of his death has been made public. Reports have been made that the KwaZulu Natal born star was suffering from depression, which largely claimed his life at Kalafong hospital in Pretoria.

Many were able to listen through visuals, last words from the mother and sister , detailing how Thami was the breadwinner and with his passing, they will be exposed to the limitation of resources. This sparked a debate on social media on how the music industry can be a monster at swallowing and promising false hope to their stars who die with nothing.

These are some of the things that were said during the memorial service concerning his passing and how it will affect his family.

“Truth be told, when ppl asked me what happened to Thami, I did not answer. We need to speak, we need to talk about it. He was a breadwinner, taking care of his sister and his mother,”- Themba Humana, Thami’s friend

I felt pain when Thami’s mother told me she has to leave the apartment to live in a shack now that he is gone, what next?” – Thami’s aunt, Mrs Buthelezi

Kabomo took to social media to share how he has been wanting to quit the music industry due to the exploitation taking place. He mentions that Thami was clearly failed by his record label Gallo Records and this is not the first artist to be a victim to such a plague.

This is what the caption had to say:

if there ever was a day I really wanted to quit this shitty music business.. that day is today.. it’s literally killing us.. Thami’s story is my story..
