10 SA Musicians With The Largest Twitter Following 2019 – Twitter allows the kind of access to celebrities that was previously never possible.

Now people can tweet directly to the accounts they follow and speak directly to people previously inaccessible. A huge following can also be great for selling products and promoting yourself, which explains why so many big names spend time on the platform.

So we decided to put together a list of the most followed accounts o Twitter. And here they are.

1. Black Coffee – 2.8 M

South African house music DJ and producer Black Coffee built his career gradually over nearly two decades, riding the growing global interest in his home country’s burgeoning dance music scene and eventually becoming arguably the biggest DJ in Africa.

2. DJ Zinhle – 2.7 M

Zinhle was one of a few women in the world of deejaying at the time and gained recognition in a male-dominated industry with hard work and sheer determination.

She started FUSE Academy in 2009 to help empower other female DJs. The academy was the first in South Africa to cater only to women. Zinhle announced in 2019 that the FUSE Academy will temporarily close its doors. 

Zinhle’s DJing career has taken her all over the world. She has had gigs in London, Miami and Glasgow.

3. DJ Fresh – 1.9 M

 He travelled to South Africa in the early ’90s and in 1997, he elevated to stardom from his first break as a radio host on South Africa’s Youth radio station, YFM.  When he left YFM, he joined 5FM in 2006 making him the first black person to host the drive time show on the predominately white radio station.

South African DJ, radio personality and producer who is known primarily for playing house music on 5FM and 947. In 2013, his song “Cool and Deadly” hit number one on 5FM’s Top 40. In 2014, he won his first Metro FM Music Award for Best Compilation Album for his album For The Love of House Volume 5.

5. DJ Tira – 1.4 M

Mthokozi Khathi known by his stage name DJ Tira, is a South African DJ, record producer, Durban kwaito artist and a founder of a record label called Afrotainment. DJ Tira is known for introducing artists such as Big Nuz, DJ C’ndo, DJ Fisherman and Dladla Mshunqisi through his record label Afrotainment

6. Oskido – 911.7 K

The son of a Zimbabwean politician and born in the Oukasie township (near Brits, South Africa) in 1967, little Oscar was schooled in his father’s home country (Rhodesia at the time), only returning to SA in 1987.

The early 90’s found him selling boerewors sausage rolls outside the Razzmatazz nightclub in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, sneaking his way inside the club to spin the closing sessions and slowing down American house tracks to a tempo that “Africans could dance to”. One night, the resident DJ didn’t pitch up… and the rest is history.

7. DJ Sbu – 800.1 K

The brand, DJ Sbu has shaped youth culture & their thinking in South Africa over the past 16 years since 2001. Despite his tough upbringing in the impoverished neighbourhood of Tembisa in Johannesburg Ekurhuleni South Africa. He has overcome obstacles on his journey and made a name for himself using his music, acting, hosting prime time radio & television shows.

8. Zonke – 782.3 K

Zonke Dikana has written and co-written hits for dance artist Winnie Khumalo, kwaito rapper Thebe, late R&B star TK and also worked with legends like Bongo Maffin and Oskido. Zonke had her big break when she wrote a song titled “Africa, My Motherland” for Germany-based band Jazzkantine. The band later became known as Culture Clan after Zonke and rappers Mandla and Mzo.

9. Shimza – 570.5 K

Ashley Raphala, also well known as DJ Shimza was born in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni is a music producer and DJ. He ventured into House Music as a DJ in 2003 which steered him to win the Red Square DJ Competition in 2006. He then went on to win the South African Music Conference which was a DJ Spin off Competition.

The highlight of his career, so far, came when he won the Gauteng Carnival DJ Competition in 2011. Winning this competition gave him much needed exposure and start-up equipment. He established and hosts the prestigious annual festival Dj Shimza’s One Man Show whereby he ploughs back into the community by creating awareness of his contributions.

Otherwise known as Mampintsha, he is one-third of the kwaito group Big Nuz. The award-winning group became known for albums like For the Fans and Undisputed. Prior to making it in the music business, Big Nuz began their career doing jingles for soaps and doing recordings that never made it to record shops.
