Khuzani Honoured as a Cultural Icon in Maskandi Music at Nelson Mandela Leadership Awards in Oxford

The recognition celebrates the multi-award-winning artist’s contribution to Maskandi music, isiZulu storytelling and the advancement of South African cultural heritage

Multi-award-winning South African Maskandi artist Khuzani Mpungose, professionally known as Khuzani has received the Cultural Icon in Maskandi Music Award at the Nelson Mandela Leadership Awards & Diplomatic Summit in Oxford, United Kingdom. The award was presented by the Lord Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Chewe Munkonge, in the presence of prominent leaders, diplomats and distinguished guests.

The Nelson Mandela Leadership Awards recognise individuals whose work is making a meaningful contribution to their countries, communities and respective fields. For Khuzani, the honour represents not only a personal career milestone, but also an important moment for Maskandi music and Zulu cultural heritage on the international stage.

Khuzani has become one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Maskandi, building a career that has brought indigenous South African music to major stages and audiences across musical genres. His recent achievements include winning Best Maskandi Album at the 2024 South African Music Awards for Angidlali Nezingane, as well as the newly introduced Best Maskandi category at the METRO FM Music Awards for Umanikinikana in April 2026, further demonstrating the genre’s expanding presence on leading national music platforms.

Reflecting on the role his supporters have played throughout his journey, Khuzani said:

“I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has continuously supported my music and my journey. Every person who buys my music, streams it, shares it, attends my performances and continues to believe in Maskandi has contributed to this achievement.”

The Oxford recognition celebrates Khuzani’s commitment to preserving the foundations of Maskandi while carrying its music, language, stories and cultural identity to new generations and international audiences.
