Lonwabo Mose – Gugulethu’s Bass-Baritone Ready for the Global Stage

From the vibrant streets of Gugulethu to the world’s most prestigious opera houses, Lonwabo Mose, 25, is making his mark as a bass-baritone with extraordinary promise. His journey from humble beginnings to landing a spot in the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindeman Young Artist Program showcases both his talent and relentless dedication.
Born in Cala in the Eastern Cape and raised in Gugulethu, Lonwabo discovered music early through choral singing, which sparked his love for opera. His breakthrough came under the mentorship of celebrated voice coach Juan Burgers, who has guided countless singers to international success. With Burgers’ guidance, Lonwabo refined his voice and stagecraft, preparing him for professional performance.
At Cape Town Opera, he has impressed audiences with roles in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Aida, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Tosca. His commanding presence and vocal power have earned him critical praise and a reputation as one of South Africa’s rising operatic talents. These experiences set the stage for international recognition.
His recent participation in the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition in Switzerland saw him reach the finals among twelve elite vocalists. That exposure led to a contract with the Metropolitan Opera and additional offers from the Vienna State Opera and Houston Opera. In December, he begins at the Met’s Lindeman Young Artist Program, a world-class incubator for operatic talent.
While his career is ascending, Lonwabo navigates significant personal responsibilities. He supports a household of four adults and must secure resources for his move to New York City, including essentials for surviving the winter and tools like an iPad to receive music and director notes.
To celebrate his next chapter, Lonwabo will host a farewell recital on Sunday, 23 November, at 15:30 at Larmenier Village in Vredehoek. The event doubles as a chance for fans and supporters to contribute to his journey.
Rooted in his Gugulethu beginnings, Lonwabo Mose embodies resilience, talent, and humility. With international stages awaiting, he is poised to inspire the next generation of classical music lovers and leave a lasting impact on the operatic world.
